International workshop: Nanopore Modelling and Experimentation

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP Nanopore Modelling and Experimentation
On 3 Nov Dr Minh Nguyen hosted an exciting international hybrid workshop at IAMT to look at a topic that I have been very interested in for some time - the motivations were.

1. the visit of Dr Ruitao Jin and Dr Sitong He from the group of Prof Ben Corry (ANU, Australia) with whom we have a DAAD project on molecular dynamics modeling - picking up from our dehydration work in 2009
2. the incoming international excellence fellow Dr Elenna Tocci (CNR, Italy) who will join our MD efforts
3. a visit of Dr Volkan Filiz (Hereon) whom we have tried to collaborate with for some time, who had never made it to KIT from the far north and with whom we share a spectacular failure in Helmholtz funding on this topic in 2017 'because water is not a future topic', despite outstanding evaluations and presentations. Indeed... 🤷‍♀️
KIT collaborators Dr Anatasia August (group of Prof Nestler) and Aleksandr Avdoshin (group of Prof Wolfgang Wenzel) gave talks, along with our guests. Prof Guy Ramon (Technion, Israel) gave a brilliant summary of the solution diffusion arguments, that have been keeping our field entertained for some time.
Multi-scale models - or Digital Twins (which was a relatively new term in 2017) are a huge challenge. The idea to this to bridge materials development with process engineering to accelerate progress remains outstanding. A cool collaboration between experimentalists and modellers - where we are all stretched out of our comfort zones.

As it goes with funding politics, good novel ideas are often non-fundable, while at some point it is nothing new anymore and everyone seems to work on it. And as it goes on, at some point the idea sparks and then activities are organised without the best people involved. The result inevitably is mediocrity and lost opportunity to lead. So here we are - doing the work anyhow and I am really looking forward to this!
